I've divided these stories up into categories that make sense to me, even if not to
anyone else.
This page is still in progress and does not yet contain all the stories I plan on recommending.

I Want To Conquer The World
A Handful Of Dust by Jenn - Clark tries to remake the world in his image; Lex attempts to stop him. Dark and painful.
Teen Of Steel; Man Of Means and Men Of Steel
by Anne Higgins - Ruling the world, curing cancer, I find it's a very
thin line. The point is that Lex and Clark together are earth-shaking.
Lex/Lian: Brotherly Love
Macellum
by Sylvia - Lionel finds and raises the baby alien after the meteor
shower. Years later, Lex and Lian return separately to Smallville and
have to decide what sort of alliance they may want. This is the first
story of this type I ever read, and it's very psychologically detailed
and intensely described. Good characterization, conceptualization, and
writing. And as you can see, it made me fall for an entire genre. Also
notable is the fact that the opening almost made me cry from sympathy
with Lionel.
Three Fairy Tales Of Smallville
by Koi - The first and second Luthor brothers set out into the world to
seek their fortunes; Martha takes a job; Pete makes a wish.
Nonstop To Nowhere
by Kat Reitz and Tzigane - You may be thinking that this is getting
repetitive, but I'm quite happy to read another story about Lex and
Lian's little antagonisms, and their messed up attraction, and their
struggles against Lionel. And there really are differences between them.
Looking Glass
by Jenn - Lionel and Martha raise Lex and Clark together. Subtle,
creepy, dark, and the beginning (and end)? Will make you shiver. This
one's unique, and very well-executed.
President Of The Warrior Angel Fan Club
by mobiusklein - Chloe, reporter, is sent to interview Lex, president
of the Warrior Angel fan club. But then Superman shows up, and trouble
starts. This one's lighter, with Lillian and Pamela having raised Lex
and Julian. Writing's got more typos and such, but still.
Long And Plotty
A Deeper Season
by Nifra Idril - I kinda want to say that this is my favorite SV fic
ever. The summer after his first year at MetU, Clark gets an internship
at LexCorp. But things become a lot less simple after he meets his boss,
Lex Luthor, and the reporter Lois Lane, and gets drawn into a web of
intrigue and seduction. The structure of the story is elegant, always
kicking it up a notch at the right time, and the descriptions are ripe.
And the characters... Clark is entirely adorkable, smart and sweet and
fumbling, dealing with the question of what to do with his life and
powers, and fighting against his arch-nemesis, the photocopier in the
office. Lex is mysterious and wounded and sleek, hotter than hot, the
kind of Lex who will leave you wimpering and clawing at the computer
monitor because you want to be in there with him. And Chloe and Pete
just seem real. That's the word I want to use for the whole
thing, actually. It's probably the most real depiction of a superpowered
alien growing up and coming to terms with himself and the world that
I've ever read. This is the kind of AU I would recommend even to people
who haven't seen the show. Languishing WIP.
The Identical Series
by Lanning Cook - This splits off from fairly early in the show, when
Lionel makes a clone of Lex, and Lex loses his identity in the world.
The fic does an excellent job of creating its own view of the characters
and the milieu, slowly diverging them as it builds up layer on layer of
new metaphors, images, themes, nicknames, terminology, references, and
relationships that continue to explore the groundwork laid by the basics
of the show.
Roomies
by Bex - AU where Clark and Lex are the same age and meet at MetU when
they're assigned to room together in their first year. Friendship and
attraction grow. But is there something more sinister going on in the
background? Just all-around well written. Languishing WIP.
When A Strawberry Is Pushed Into A Mountain
by Thamiris - I'm linking to this story in particular because it's the
first by her that I read, and it's got all sorts of goodies. But really, I
just love Thamiris' style. It's full of lush wrought-iron sentences,
milk and honey syntax, images that dance burlesque. It's the kind of
thing I always wish I could write, what comes so opposite to my natural
style. So go, roll in the words, revel, and there are also charming
confessions and hot sex.
Something Is Wrong With The Sum Of Us
by joyfulgirl41 - Lex and Lana mysteriously switch bodies. Lana has to
deal with the pressures of being a Luthor. Lex has to deal with the
worst that being female can throw at him. Clark has to deal with intense
sexual confusion. Everyone has to work together to figure out how to
switch them back. Chloe's great in this story, and I actually like Lana.
In fact, I ended up rooting for the Clana relationship as much as the
Clex, and hoping that she wasn't left dumped and unhappy. Why can't
Clark date both of them? I actually even wanted Lex, Clark, and Lana to
just settle it nicely and have a threesome, and that's something I never
expected to think, ever. Languishing WIP.
Conflicts Of Interest and Visiting Hours
by Pru - Conner Clark Luthor, son of Lex, age nine, likes his life. But
one thing is missing, so he hatches a scheme to find his mother. He
doesn't quite find what he's expecting. Excellent, rich description,
especially of emotions, and very funny, but also with really deep,
moving parts. The sequel is set when Conner's fifteen, and brings in a
lot more angst, but still has bunches of humor.
Happy And Fluffy
The Clarkbot
by Mahaliem - Jor-El kidnaps Clark and makes a double of him, copying
Clark's memories over, in hopes that this Clarkbot will be more
obedient. Clark, in a burst of genius inspiration, thinks of something
so bizarre, so ludicrous, that if he can get that idea implanted in the
'bot's head, it will be amazingly obvious that it's not really him. What
is this stupendously dead-on difference? Read and see, and weep with
laughter.
Regency Clex part one, part two, and part three
by afrai - Lovely Jane Austen-style reworking of the beginning of SV.
The language and the quips will make you happy, though a bit of angst is
introduced in the last part. Languishing WIP.
Action Figures by Caelum - Lex plays with his toys. I squee.
Eavesdropping
by Lady Ra - Not only does this have a very nice, sweet relationship
between Lex and Clark, it also made me really like Jonathan. Wow,
imagine that.
The Real Thing, Cognac And Lava Lamps, and Lex 101
by Melisande - Clark is in college, and his roommate Trent is too much
of a stoner to notice the alien superpowers. But he does pick up on
Clark's attraction to Lex. Clark's a dork; he starts to explore his
gaypowers. Of gayness. That are gay. In a gay gay way. And hilarity
ensues.
Angsty And Dark
Breathing Water by Shrift - A beautiful, poetic, aching look at Lex's life.
Bizarre And Kinky Miscellany
The DoubleMen Challenge
not issued by Pun - Of course no one would have ever issued an
imagemanip challenge for slashing people with themselves. And even if
someone had offered that challenge, no one would have made pictures of
Lex/Lex or Clark/Clark, etc. And even if they archived the pictures, I
would never look at the site. And certainly not rec it to you guys. And
you'd never check it out. Of course not. That would be, like, wrong.
At The Fifteenth Annual Evil Masterminds Convention
by Basingstoke - Lex/Scott Evil. Two young men are dragged by their
fathers to the evil masterminds convention, and are really bored until
they meet each other. Quite funny.
